By the looks of it, Saturday nights Fishing with Phil trip on the Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach was just like any other fishing trip. About 50 anglers from Fishers Of Men West Coast were on deck talking about their past angling conquests as well as wondering what big fish may lie ahead.
In addition, over 20 kids were on board, most for their very first fishing trip. One of the central beliefs of the Phil Friedman Youth Outdoor Program has always been that "You can't protect what you don't understand." Kids who get out on the water and see all that it has to offer will surely grow up to protect it.
Graham McCulloch brought his 11-year old son Brayden all the way from Las Vegas for his very first fishing trip. After a slow start, Brayden caught fire and landed three nice sand bass with some expert coaching from is dad. "There is nothing better, nothing, than watching your grandson catch his first fish," said proud grandpa Jack.
There was a larger goal to this fishing trip and that was to raise money to send over 5,000 pairs of shoes to the poor of Baja's East Cape. "This is the first of three trips we are running to raise the funds we need to send 5,000 pairs of shoes to Baja's East Cape.
Thanks to Wallace Air Cargo Group, not only did another group of children get to experience fishing, but also funds were raised to take care of Baja's poorest. "This is a great night," said Jack McCulloch's Wide Shoes in Brea, Ca. "We have taken a giant step towards sending shoes down south again.
