VIDEO: Dexter, Fishing with Phil and fun times on the Native Sun

What a great night! We got to see the TV show Dexter filmed as well as have a great night on the water Fishing with Phil on the twilight Native Sun last night. Sculpin and sand bass provided anglers with good action as well as good table-fare. 

Captain Gabriel Ceballos and crew put us on some biting sculpin and sand bass. Leadhead and squid effective as well as a dropper-loop set up with a 4-ounce torpedo sinker and a 1-o hook. 

 

We also caught a mytery fish that you are going to want to see and saw lots of market squid around the boat that just might float tonight and provide anglers with live squid for bait.

VIDEO: Unusual fish taken Fishing with Phil. What the heck is it?

   As anglers fished off Long Beach, Ca on a "Fishing with Phil" twilight trip last night an unusual little critter swam by the Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing. We couldn't resist netting it so you can play another edition of "What the heck is it?"

VIDEO: Mola mola treat anglers to incredible show

Anglers on the 3/4 day fishing boat Tradition out of Redondo Sportfishing were treated to a delightful spectacle as over 30 ocean sunfish surrounded the boat in the Santa Monica Bay.Nine-year-old Hector Medina from Carson looked at the creatures in awe. "Look at those things," he exclaimed. "What are they?"

 

Mola mola or sunfish are the largest of the bony fish and can reach over 5,000-pounds. 

Mola are found in temperate and tropical oceans around the world. They are frequently seen basking in the sun near the surface and are often mistaken for sharks when their huge dorsal fins emerge above the water. In fact, several anglers on board the Tradition shouted shark when they saw the large fin protruding out of the ocean. 

Needless to say, we all felt very fortunate to encounter the mola mola up close and personal.

You talk about disgusting. You talk about morons. This video shows a couple of idiots using dynamite to kill fish. The two brain surgeons can be heard laughing in the background as they toss an explosive in to the water.

What follows is a sad and despicable scene as dead fish come floating to the top. I sinceerly hope these two are caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Please be warned that there is some profanity as you might imagine these guys have a very limited vocabulary.

VIDEO: Galley girl swallows giant fish eyeball on fishing trip

In the spirit of the Olympic Games in London, Tradition galley girl Lindsay Flora attempts to do what few human beings have accomplished in life; swallowing a freshly-plucked rockfish eyeball. I mean think of it; have you ever done it; do you know anyone who has? 

The accomplishment took place on a 3/4 day trip in the Santa Monica Bay last Friday. After swallowing the gooey eyeball on her third try and subsequent victory dance, Flora proclaimed that "it was just the right thing to do." 

 

Maybe her act will inspire a new category in the Olympic Games for 2016.

VIDEO: 9-year old boy needs help with big barracuda off the So. Cal coast

Nine year old Hector Medina from Wilmington, CA hooked up with a big barracuda off the Southern California Coast while fishing on board the Tradition out of Redondo. Medina pulled as hard as he could be he needed help.

That's when Randy Crowell from Pink Fishing stepped in to led a hand. Crowell could have kept fishing for himself as the barracuda action was as good as it gets. But helping the 9-year old was more important to him.

VIDEO: Boat sinks in Redondo Beach has surprise ending.

The captain of a Redondo Beach based boat was devastated to find that his boat had sank at the docks in Basin 3, King Harbor. Apparently, the boat was out making live squid the previous night as well as catching two nice white seabass.

The squid in the bait tank clogged up the tank and the result was the boat taking on water and sinking at the docks. But after a lot of hard work, the ship was operational again as you will see in this Phil Friedman Productions video.

Video: Pelican survives scary dog encounter on Long Beach bait receiver

A brown pelican made the mistake of entering the territory of Diego the dog on the Long Beach Bait receiver on Saturday evening. Pelican's regularly visit bait receivers for a free lunch. They have learned that it is much easier to wade into a bait receiver full of sardines and anchovies for a meal instead of scouring the sea in search of. 

Diego tries in vain to get at the pelican through a net stretched over the bait receiver. The bird finally gains its freedom by swimming through an open end of the floating receiver just out of reach of Diego's jaws. 

Then as the bird swims back and forth in front of Diego seemingly taunting the dog, the bait receiver employee abruptly scoops up the un-expecting bird and tosses it to sea much to Diego's dismay.
