Steve Bermudes and his lovely wife Susie recently returned from a trip to Ensenada where they dined, shopped, traveled and of course fished. Bermudes took a trip on the Gamefisher Ensenada with the PFO group. Fishing was tough on that particular day but Captain Mike Slater burned fuel and worked his tail off looking for that magical floating kelp.

While the group never found :the right kelp" Bermudes got to catch a few rockfish at Punta Banda, see around 40-blue whales spouting, and ride one of the nicest boats you will find anywhere.

Back on shore, Bermudes enjoyed surf fishing Estero Beach. Bermudes said that he caught several guitarfish with a beautiful Baja sunset as the back round. "I like catching those things because they take you for a walk on the beach," said Bermudes. Bermudes also said that the tail of a guitarfish is pure meat and makes for some of the best fish tacos imaginable. 

When the fish didn't bite, Bermudes said he found some of the best Chinese food he has ever eaten at Peking 2000. Bermudes cautioned however, not to go to the buffet. Go to the sit down Peking 2000 for the best food. "It's located on Avenida Lopez Mateos by the old movie theater close to Avenida Reforma," said Bermudes. 

Bermudes and wife plan on returning soon again.

Tim Rand lands a 32-pound halibut surf fishing off Long Beach

The story is a bit out of date but it's worth retelling. I ran
into a good friend of mine on the Fishing with Phil Twilight  Friday night. Not only was it great to see Tim Rand and hear that his family was doing well but he also had a great fishing tale to tell before boarding the Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing.

Rand, an avid surf fisherman who hits the beach a couple of times each week was fishing near Cherry Beach in Long Beach about two months ago when something really big grabbed hold of his bait. Rand was fishing with a live 5-inch smelt and like most good surf fishermen, he was using light line; in this case 8-lb test. 

This time however, it was obvious that this was no ordinary fish. It stripped line off Rand reel at will and seemed to have the power of a freight train.

 "I knew it was a halibut," said Rand. "The only question was how big it was," said Rand.

After a 45-minute battle that required following the might brute up and down the beach several times, Rand had a fishing buddy ready with a net. Peering through the water, the people who had gathered to watch Rand battle his foe could see a brown giant fish. It was a 32-pound flattie that measured 42 inches. The giant fish was netted as the battle came to a finish. High fives and celebration were in order as well as a lot of great eating fish for family and friends for the week to come.

"I know there are more big fish out there," said Rand. "I just can't wait to get back to the beach again."
