Audio Update: Tremendous bluefin tuna fishing for the San Diego Fleet in Baja

Tremendous bluefin tuna action continues with most every single boat out of San Diego catching 5-fish Mexican limits of the hard fighting gamefish today. There were big schools of bluefin as close as 60 miles from Point Loma.

The water temperatures are up to 68 degrees which has the bluefin in a biting mood. In addition to the bluefin, there are still kelp paddy yellowtail, some dorado and a few yellowfin tuna moving up the Baja Coast.

Great white shark spotted swimming with whales one mile off the Southern California Coast

Captain Chris Batts is reporting a great white shark sighting approximately 1 mile off Point Fermin in Southern California. “We just left it at around 11:20am,” said Batts from the Long Beach based whale watch vessel Christopher out of Harbor Breeze Cruises.

Curiously, the estimated 10-12 foot apex predator was swimming along several whales blue and fin whales. “He was just swimming along, calmly and very near the whales,” said Batts. “It was quite a sight for our passengers.”

On several occasions, the white shark tried to edge closer to a baby fin whale. "He (the shark) wasn't exactly after the baby fin whale but he did get pretty close," said Batts. "The adult fin whales kept putting themselves between the shark and the baby."

On June 26^th, Batts spotted another or possibly the same great white shark off Huntington Beach. The shark was seen in an area that has an abundance of market squid in it and an abundance of predators feeding on that squid. Sportfishing boats had been catching white seabass to over 60 pounds, as well as some nice yellowtail and lots of 6-8 pound barracuda.

In addition, there was copious amounts of sea-lions also in the area. Smaller great whites are known to frequent the Huntington Beach area feeding on rays, sharks, halibut and other inshore species. When great whites reach about 12 feet in length, they turn their attention to pinnipeds and move offshore.

Batts is headed back out this afternoon on board the Triumphant this afternoon to see if he can locate the whales and the great white again.

LISTEN: Great white shark spotted off the Southern California Coast

Breaking Great White Shark News

Phil Friedman Outdoors Breaking News has learned of a great white shark sighted off Huntington Beach, California shortly after 5pm on the whale watch vessel Christopher out of Harbor Breeze Cruises in Long Beach.

Captain Christian Batts just did an exclusive interview live from the Christopher and said the shark was estimated to be 12 feet in length.

The shark was seen in an area that has an abundance of market squid in it and an abundance of predators feeding on that squid. Sportfishing boats have been catching white seabass to over 60 pounds, as well as some nice yellowtail and lots of 6-8 pound barracuda.

In addition, there are copious amounts of sea-lions also in the area. Smaller great whites are know to frequent the Huntington Beach area feeding on rays, sharks, halibut and other inshore species. When great whites reach about 12 feet in length, they turn there attention to pinnipeds and move offshore.

Long time skipper Don Ashley from Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach says he has never seen a great white in our local waters and this is only the second time that Batts has seen one. "This is a day that the people on board are never going to forget," said Batts.
