But the stories he’s collected (from writers as diverse as American pulp master Cornell Woolrich, British enfant terrible Martin Amis and metafictional patriarchs Donald Barthelme and Jorge Luis Borges) make a strong case that the age-old narrative setup–a guy wakes up, doesn‘t know where he is and doesn‘t remember what he‘s done for the last 24 hours–strikes deep chords within us, and deserves a closer critical look.
