Rick Leighton from Hawthorne just finished up his third chemotherapy treatment last week so it was time to go fishing. Leighton has gone from being in a wheelchair to feeling good enough to hit the beach for some surf fishing. Along with his son Shawn and best friend Joe Gallagher from Palos Verdes, the trio headed over to Surfside where they met up with some other friends. It was a magical day.
Leighton caught and released 3 shovelnose sharks, got his new shoes soaking wet, and just had the time of his life surrounded by friends and family who really love him. “It feels good as hell to be fishing again,” said Leighton as we waited for another bite.
Gallagher caught and released several sharks and caught a big yellowfin croaker using grunion for bait white son Shawn was hooked up constantly too. “We all need to do this more often,” said Gallagher. “This is great.”
Leighton got to watch a video that was shot this very special day at the beach. “I’ve got a tear in my eyes,” he said. “Good times indeed.
