Ranger 85 heads for the bonanza out of San Diego Tuesday

The Ranger 85 is headed out on a 2.5 day fishing adventure on Tuesday night. There has been tremendous fishing for a variety of sought after gamefish. Bluefin and yellowfin tuna, dorado, yellowtail, marlin, skipjack, shortbill spearfish and even a report of a wahoo taken 150 miles from San Diego.

Some of the bluefin tuna have exceeded 100 pounds so make sure you have an outfit with 40-50 pound test. The weather has come down too so everything points to another great Ranger 85 adventure.

How you can help those suffering in Mexico from Hurricane Ingrid & Tropical Storm Manuel

There are so many sad stories coming out of Mexico after two weather systems battered several Mexican States leaving over 100 dead with hundreds of thousands displaced. For many American tourists, the combination of Tropical Storm Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid resulted in fishing trips and other outings being cancelled as well as many tourists being stranded for a few days.

For Mexico’s poor, the results were far more catastrophic. Sixty-eight people of the approximately 800 who live in a village called la Pintada in the state of Guerreo are missing and feared dead. Mothers wept for their children who were swept away when a tsunami of dirt, trees, rocks and other debris swept through the town forcing poorly constructed wooden houses into an already swollen river.

Senor Esteban Balderama Hays from the Sinaloa Tourism Department was on the Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio Show on Friday for the Spanish Show and asked for help for the poor in this region. “We simply were not prepared for these two storms,” said Balderama Hays. “There are hundreds of thousands of displaced people who need help and I know how good and generous the people of the United States are. Even one dollar will help.”

As a young man, I live in the hills of Guerreo in an Amuzco Indian Village called Tlacoachistlahuaca. I remember the first day I met the local kids. I was teaching English but soon learned that many of the children didn’t speak Spanish rather they spoke their own dialect. It was not buenos dias; it was Shamalo every morning as these hard working, decent people went to work.

One 12 year old girl named Carmela later became my Godchild. When she first met me, she looked at my blue eyes and blurted out “ojos de gato.” Cat’s eyes. Upon completing the first day of teaching I told the kids who spoke Spanish that class would be at 10am every morning. Many had a blank stare when Carmela stood up and instructed me how to point at the sun to indicate when class would be. I never got that right and had kids arriving at the local Catholic Church all hours of the morning. The people of this region enriched my life and taught me so much more than I was able to impart to them. Now they are in need of our help.

So we can all feel sorry for the people of Mexico or we can do something positive. “The best way to help is to donate to the Mexican Red Cross,” said Balderama Hays. “No amount is too small and I have confidence that with the generosity of our brothers and sisters in the United States, we will come through this.”

Big Shark Off Torrance Beach Early This Morning

A sizeable soupfin shark was caught off Torrance Beach this morning in Southern California by 21 year old Philip Friedman. Soupfins are known by a number of names, including tope, flake, school shark and vitamin shark.

They are called vitamin sharks because their livers contain an oil that is rich in Vitamin A. It became the main source of supply for vitamin A in the United States during World War II but was overexploited and the numbers of fish caught plummeted.

They’re easily identified by their slender body and long snout, their small second dorsal fin and the large lobe on the upper section of their tail. Soupfins are often found in schools of up to 50 individuals and may travel hundreds of miles to breed. Females incubate eggs within their body, giving birth to up to 52 pups after a yearlong gestation period. The shark is harmless to swimmers in the area.

Anglers around the Torrance and Redondo Beach areas have been using slabs of mackerel for bait and have found fishing to be best at night or in the early morning hours of the day. The shark in the photo took the bait just before 3am this morning. Examination of stomache contents in previous studies indicate that the soupfin is not all that picky about what they eat. It appears that they will feed on whatever is available including squid, sardines, mackerel and other bait-fish.

Besides soupfin sharks, fisherman have also been catching a guitarfish, bat rays, leopard sharks and butterfly rays.

Soupfin sharks mature slowly and give birth to a relatively few young at a time, making them vulnerable to overfishing. Soupfins are highly prized for their meat and fins, which are used in a number of Asian dishes, including traditional sharkfin soup.

In the northern part of its U.S. west coast range (British Columbia to northern California), most soupfins are males. In southern California, females predominate. Along the central coast of California, there are roughly equal numbers of males and females. One tagged soupfin shark migrated from British Columbia to southern California in 22 months.

Rancho Cucamonga Bass Pro Shop General manager Bob Minor was a recent guest on the Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio Show saying he was honored for Bass Pro Shops and Toyota to be involved in the September 28 Striper King Classic at Diamond Valley Lake in support of the Wounded Warriors. I’m glad to be able to show a small token of our appreciation to the men and women who have sacrificed so much to make us free,” said Minor.

Bass Pro Shops, Toyota and Diamond Valley Lake are coming together so that the Wounded Warriors will have a pontoon boat, a Captain, a Guide and a goody bag. “We just want these brave men and women to feel appreciated,” said Minor.

The event will feature a ton of raffle prizes, the Laker Girls, delicious food, and hopefully some darn good striper fishing. For the Wounded Warriors, one can only hope that this day on the water will be the start of some peace and tranquility that only the outdoors can bring.
