Whale watching enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that a new, state of the art whale watching vessel arrived at Harbor Breeze Cruises in Long Beach on Tuesday and made her first trips today.
The 83-foot Triumphant will be out on daily whale watching cruises scouring the Southern California Coast for whales, dolphin, sea lions and other fascinating creatures that inhabit our coastline.
The Triumphant was the brainchild of Dan Salas, the CEO of Harbor Breeze Cruises. Salas began thinking about building such a vessel when the economy had bottomed out during the recent recession. "We started thinking about this vessel when the economy was terrible,” said Salas. “But at some point you can't be sitting on the fence anymore. Now we're here and it looks like the economy is coming back."
The 150-passenger vessel took 50 employees over 24,000 man
hours to complete. The Triumphant features stadium seating and has a hull
design that allows the boat to sit higher in the water allowing for a more fuel
efficient and smoother ride. Besides being the perfect platform for viewing
leviathans, the Triumphant also features a dance floor and is perfect for
dinner cruises, harbor tours and parties and celebrations.
Besides offering a spectacular view of nature up close and personal, the Triumphant is fast. She can cover an immense geographical area. The speed of the Triumphant allows her to view whales from Newport Beach to the Santa Monica Bay to half way to Catalina Island on a normal trip.
Southern California is a marvelous whale watching venue. You can see gray whales make part of the longest mammalian migration known to man as they travel round trip from the frigid Bering Seas to the warm water lagoons of Baja, California. Earlier this year, the Christopher out of Harbor Breeze Cruises came across one of the largest pods of gray whales ever witnessed; over 20 whales coming to the surface and spouting brought the crowd to their feet.
Other whales include the fin whale, known as the greyhound of the sea for its ability to reach 23 miles per hour in speed. There are the spectacular humpback whales, minke whales, and of course there are the largest creatures to have ever inhabited the earth, the blue whale. Blue whales; with hearts the size of a Volkswagen and a tongue that weighs more than an elephant grace our coastline at times mostly during the summer months.
Of course, there are pods of dolphins that will come to play off the bow of the Triumphant, numerous sea birds and pinnipeds as well as other surprises like the mighty orca who frequent Southern California waters from time to time.
“People are amazed to see such wonders, such spectacles of nature just minutes from port,” said Salas. “Every child, every family should get the chance to see this at least one time.”
