A standing room only crowd gathered last night at the St.
John Powerhouse Church in South Central Los Angeles to honor and remember our
friend, Flynn Robinson. Former teammate and GM of the Golden State Warriors
Jerry West, NBA star Trevor Ariza and a whole lot of decent and good people
came out to pay their respects.
“I hate to use the word sweet when describing an athlete,” said West. “But Flynn was the kindest, gentlest man I have ever met.” Pastor Craig Lowe and Master of Ceremony Sam Watson presided over a rousing night of celebrating the life of Flynn. “This is not a funeral,” said Watson. “This is a celebration of Flynn’s life.” And that’s what it was.
Speaker after speaker talked about how Robinson had changed
their life for the better. His step children gave an emotional testimonial about
the man we all loved. They spoke about how decent, kind and loving Flynn was in
raising them through their formative teenage years.
I was called upon to speak and couldn’t help remember running out on the Forum court as a 12-year old when the Lakers beat the New York Knicks in 1972. I had no idea that one of my heroes, Flynn Robinson would come into my life decades later and make me a better human being. I owe a lot to Flynn. He was always there for me; always encouraging me; always a friend.
There was the thousands of kids that Flynn motivated on the
Phil Friedman Youth Fishing outings. There was the 300 orphans that Flynn
played basketball with at the Rosarito Beach Hotel and there was the friend
that I will always have with me in my heart.
"He was as wonderful a person as I have ever met," said Will Ebersman. "We miss him but we also have him with us in spirit 24/7."
West remembered when Flynn came to the Lakers in late 1971. “I can’t believe I am standing next to you,” Robinson told West in the locker room. “Flynn; don’t do this,” said West. “I’m really normal.” West said that Robinson really loved him. “Hell; even my parents didn’t love me like Flynn did,” said West.
West also remembered that Robinson was losing his hair in
1971. “Then one day, before a game, Flynn showed up with hair. He had bobby
pins and the worst toupee I think I’ve ever seen,” said West. Later in the
game, Flynn took a hard foul and his hair piece stood straight up as he made
his way up the court. Chick Hearn said he looked like a white-tailed deer
running up the court.
Flynn’s brother John remembered Flynn nailing up a makeshift rim to their house in Illinois because they couldn’t afford anything else. “Every morning at 6am, Flynn would start in at shooting hoops,” remembered brother John. “He would shoot for hours upon hours.”
According to his brother, Flynn also took a broom handle and would knock rocks into an adjacent empty field. “Depending on how well he hit the rock, you could hear him making the call; single, double, homerun.”
While Flynn accomplished so much as a professional athlete, it was obvious from talking to the wonderful people who had gathered their last night that Flynn’s greatest accomplishment in life was being a good and decent man and role model for thousands of kids.
And Flynn’s good works haven’t ended. He brought so many good people together last night all motivated to do good works in his name. In fact, there were so many good people in attendance last night that my son Patrick and I are planning on attending services there this Sunday.
“We should all have some Flynn Robinson in us,” said West. “The world would truly be a better place.”
