There is Nothing Fishy about Phil Friedman By Jack E. George
“When I was 12 years old I got my first job. It was cleaning fishing boats. I thought I had died and gone to heaven,” says Phil Friedman, teacher, radio talk show host, philanthropist, and professional fisherman. Phil’s life has many chapters, and each one is as exciting as the next. After completing his basic education at all Catholic schools, he then graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a major in history and a minor in semantics.
Phil used his education and first became a teacher. There was something constantly tugging at him to leave the classroom and get out in the open. Since he lived close to Mexico, he spent a lot of time in the country. He also enjoyed visiting Costa Rica. He developed a strong tie to the Mexican culture. His teaching, love of fishing, and entrepreneurial abilities caused him to create a company he named 976-tuna. This was actually the phone number people called in order to get the latest fishing information in various areas, including Baja. The caller would pay $1 in order to receive the latest in fishing conditions. The business became so large that he was forced to leave his teaching position in order to devote 100 percent of his attention to his business.
