The bite and light-switch are on for Southern California anglers

It’s a funny phenomenon. Sometimes the fish just don’t want to bite; and I mean they don’t want to bite anywhere. And then sometimes; all of a sudden, the light switch goes on and the fish feed in several different areas. Today, the light switch went on.

In northern Baja, significant progress continues. The Sportfishing Association of California sent a spotter plane up last week and they saw copious amounts of firecracker yellowtail; a term that refers to a smaller grade of the hard fighting jacks. The Prowler had 34 yellowtail on an overnight trip while the Pacific Voyager limited out on a multi-day trip.

There has been a bluefin tuna taken on the Independence a week ago 175 miles from San Diego and other fish seen at 200 miles but no significant sign or signal that albacore or any other offshore tuna is ready to bust open.

In many years, there is no signal other than good conditions and we have that now. Albacore have been known to submarine into an area overnight so one never really knows.

The Punta Banda area continues to produce good fishing for barracuda and off the hook calico bass fishing. Sergio Sussarey from Sergio’s Sportfishing Center in Ensenada says that 20-25 pound yellowtail continue to maraud around Todos Santos Island with some excellent catches registered. There has also been some good hits on barracuda as well as some good sand bass fishing at University Point.

The Coronado Islands have been quiet for a week but there has been some fantastic fishing for big yellowtail. Lots of yellowtail in the 18-25 pound class and bigger here with some 8-12 pound fork also in the mix. Private boater Doug Rubin said that South Island to the Middle Grounds was jugged with 25 pound yellowtail over the weekend. Sportboats had more difficulty but that could change tomorrow.

Yellowtail made their presence felt at Catalina Island as the Pursuit caught 50 fish today. Most of the fish were in the 6-10 pound class. Bongos with skipper Joe Berian found a kelp near the 14 mile bank for 14 yellows while even the half day boat Monte Carlo caught two yellowtail off a kelp just outside the Horseshoe Kelp. There was even a report of a yellowtail taken of the jetty in Surfside; right in front of the Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio Studio.

Private boater Gregg Warren says Catalina Island is crawling with white seabass. Warren took second place in the WON tournament over the weekend with a beautiful 44.8-pound croaker. “Limits for 3 (anglers) in 4 hours.”

Today, Options and Mardiosa had one fish limits of seabass at Catalina Island while the New Hustler took limits of the fine eating croaker at Santa Cruz Island.
