When Western Pride Captain Jeff Patrick dropped down in 260 feet of water on Wednesday, he was expecting some more fine eating rockfish.  Instead, he found himself in a tough battle with a 125-pound opah.

Opah are normally caught offshore in much deeper waters. “They are listed as uncommon, in tropical and temperate seas around the world,” said Rick Feeney from the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. “It's common in supermarkets in Hawaii. It's a delicious fish to eat. It's one of my favorites. Around here they are more uncommon and extremely rare as you go farther north to Puget Sound and Alaska. You are right. They are usually caught farther offshore,” said Feeney.

“I couldn’t get any line of this fish,” said Patrick. “I tried to pass the rod off to a deckhand because I was getting tired; but he walked away and said do it yourself.” In fact, a few days after the 45-minute battle, Patrick’s arms were still hurting.

Patrick hooked the pelagic brute that wandered into the shallows on 30-pound test. He was convinced that it was some kind of a shark and even contemplated cutting it off after about ½ hour. Patrick was not only getting tired but he was concerned for his passengers and wanted to move the boat to a more productive rockfish area.

“I am so thankful to everyone on board. They all were so patient and wanted to see what the mystery fish was.”

After a brutal 45-minute struggle, the giant fish came to color and Patrick knew then that he had hooked something really special. “That’s when I got nervous,” he said. “I really wanted to land this thing.”

With the help of his great crew, the mighty, brilliantly colored fish was lifted from the sea and hoisted over the rail of the half day boat and plopped on deck. There was applause as well as gasps from the anglers on board; many of whom have never seen the otherworldly looking creature.

“I’ve been doing this for 30 years and it’s the biggest fish I’ve ever caught,” said the Captain. “It’s the fish of a lifetime; a real blessing.”
