Saturday was a huge day for Wilmington's Manuel and Hector Medina, who made their first communion at La Sagrada Familia Church.
Their parents, Hector and Gabriela, held a party complete with a taco stand, mechanical bull and plenty of people celebrating and congratulating the boys.
It also was an important day for yours truly as padrino to Manuel. It was an honor to have been chosen for such an important and pivotal day in the boys' lives. So on Memorial Day, it was time to continue the celebration.
I picked up the boys and took them to the Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio show studios in Surfside for a day's surf fishing. I tied on a small gold lure for Manuel and told him to cast it out and retrieve it slowly.
On his third cast, Manuel hooked something big. I mean really big. He was using a small trout rod with a 6-pound test when he got hold of something that literally was pulling him down the beach. After 20 minutes, he handed me the rod and reel. I fought the mystery fish for more than an hour with a crowd gathering when I
passed it off to Bob Osborn.

It was looking bleak at Catalina Island yesterday. Too many boats; not enough yellowtail. Then, all of a sudden, the white seabass went loco with many boats catching limits of the fine eating, hard fighting croaker.
