The Pot of Gold Halibut Derby gets rolling at Long Beach Sportfishing on Wednesday January 16 and will run through March 10 with a Fish-Off for the grand prize on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17. The trips will run Wednesday through Sunday on the Native Sun and cost $60. The $60 fee not only includes passage, bait and crew but it makes you eligible for weekly prizes as well as the final cash prize which in the past has been several thousand dollars.

Last year was one of the best halibut fishing years in a decade. David Akamine form Torrance caught the year’s biggest flatfish with a 39.20-pound beauty. In 2012, there were several multiple flatfish days including Sunday, February 26 when 14 legal halibut were taken on a single trip.

One of the keys to catching halibut may seem obvious but is one that many anglers ignore and that is to keep your bait on the bottom. “If there is a lot of wind and current and you need 8-ounces or more weight; use it,” said Akamine. The clock is ticking on the 2012 rockfish season as the end is in sight. On January 1, the Southern California rockfish season closes for 2-months. This has been one of the best years in recent memory for the tasty bottom dwellers. Both in terms of the size of the fish taken as well as the numbers.

“It has truly been a spectacular year,” said Victory skipper Mike Bleu out of Pierpoint Landing. “We’ve had limits (10 fish per angler) on numerous days and the fish have been fat.” Captain Andy Siratt of the Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing agrees. “We have caught fish locally that you normally see out at San Clemente or San Nicolas Islands,” said Siratt. “Our passengers have been able to catch big beautiful vermilion rockfish, salmon grouper, lingcod and more.”

Art Soriano was on the Enterprise yesterday braving wet and cold weather but it paid off. Soriano took his limit with a combination of nice whitefish, sculpin and other fine eating bottom grabbers with Captain Frank Savino at the helm.

If you are looking for an explanation for what has made 2012 so prolific, Don Ashley from Pierpoint Landing has an answer. “We have had two straight years, prior to this year of extremely cool water,” said Ashley. “Rockfish thrive in these conditions.”

Wintertime surf-fishing action has been excellent recently. As water temperatures cool, barred perch have become the staple. There is still a chance for a halibut, corbina, yellowfin croaker and even a striper if you can imagine that. There have been several striped bass taken this month from the Santa Monica Bay to Huntington Beach.

More times than not you will be catching barred perch and using light line is essential when fishing bait or grubs. Pete Wilkowski from Just Fishing By Pete in Redondo Beach says that 4-6 pound test will catch your more fish. “Anglers fishing lighter line just plain do better,” said Wilkowski.

Philip Friedman Jr. took a nice barred perch on chrome Krocodile off Surfside on Wednesday in windy, rainy conditions. Bob Osborn took a perch that weighed 3-pounds as well as a fat corbina recently also off Surfside.

Loreto marlin jumps on to Baja Beach stunning beach-goers

Pam Bolles from the Baja Big Fish Company in Loreto called in to the Baja Now Radio show last week with this incredible tale. “People here are still talking about it,” said Bolles. “It was an incredible sight.”

What is Bolles talking about?

A couple of Loreto hotel workers from the El Santuario Beach Club had waded out off Ensenada Blanca Beach in Baja California Sur in search of some delicious chocolate clams a few weeks ago.

The water here is very shallow, only ankle to waist deep out for a good 250 yards.

As the unsuspecting men continued to search more tasty bivalves, a fin appeared out of the aqua blue Sea of Cortez and was headed right for them.

“Tiburon,” shouted a co-worker who was on the beach. The two men turned around to be confronted by a fin slicing through the tranquil bay and headed right for them.

The men in the water were simply too frightened to move; seemingly paralyzed in fear as the fin approached. Then, at the last minute, the creature veered off and headed towards the beach leaving the men frightened yet thankful at the same time.

They followed the fin as did several beach-goers as it made it way closer to the beach in very shallow water.

Then something incredible and completely unexpected happened.

The fish launched itself out of the water with bait fleeing in every direction and landed upon the beach.

What every thought was a shark turned out to be a 180-pound striped marlin. Some of the people on the beach let out a scream, not sure what is was or what was happening. The man on the beach who had warned his compadres of what he thought was an imminent attack, couldn’t believe his eyes. 

He quickly grabbed a nearby gaff and headed toward the regal billfish. He plunged the gaff into the mighty fish but was unable to drag it through the sand alone. That’s when several of the beach-goers and hotel workers pitched in to drag the formidable gamefish to a more secure area.

“I have never heard of this happening before in Loreto,” said Bolles. “It’s an incredible story and yet another reason I am thankful to be living here with my family.”

Dec. 15 event set for Turtle Beach Store on Artesia

 

Caught up in the Holiday Spirit, "The Manzanar Fishing Club" filmmakers and a very special guest will host a Homecoming DVD Signing Party at Turtle Beach Company Store 1-3 pm on Saturday, Dec. 15. Singer-songwriter Harold Payne will join the festivities and perform a set highlighted by the theme song of the movie, "To Be Free."

 

"We're very excited about having this event in Gardena," said the movie's director and co-producer Cory Shiozaki. "So many members of our team are from Gardena that we all felt it was appropriate to hold this event here in our hometown. And what a thrill it was when Harold agreed to play!"

 

The film was met with a rousing reception during a limited theatrical release that covered the West Coast, Hawaii, Washington, DC and New York. A particularly exciting local highlight was a two-week run at the AMC South Bay Galleria in September. The DVD was released just last month.

"We had a great time in the theaters," Shiozaki added, "and we look forward to resuming in 2013. But we also want to reach out to even more people with the DVD. This is an important story that needs to be remembered."

 

Called "a terrific documentary" (The Seattle Times), "absorbing" (Los Angeles Times) and "a window into something that still remains mysterious" (San Francisco Chronicle), "The Manzanar Fishing Club" chronicles the WWII Japanese American internment from a unique perspective: through the eyes of those who slipped past the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to fish for trout in the surrounding waters of the Sierra Nevada.

The injustice of the internment has been well documented in books, television and film. Rather than focus on the confinement itself, the movie spotlights real-life stories of freedom and the human spirit, dating back seven decades to when the first trainloads of prisoners arrived at the remote military-style camp in eastern California.

 

Reflecting the strong Gardena roots of this significant film, in addition to Shiozaki and Harold Payne, writer/co-producer Richard Imamura, executiver producer Alan Sutton, promo man Chris Payne and narrator Scott Sutton are also locals. Editor/co-producer Lester Chung and co-narrator Philip Friedman hail from nearby Torrance.

"Coming off the most successful theatrical release ever for a documentary film about the internment, we're now able to bring the story to an even wider audience," said director-producer Cory Shiozaki. "This has been a remarkable journey, and it's a testament to the power of film to transform and delight.”

 

The film chronicles the Japanese American internment during WWII from a unique perspective: through the eyes of those who slipped past the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to fish for trout in the surrounding waters of the Sierra Nevada.

The fishing connection has been a vital part of the film since the beginning. “Our film is about fishermen and coping with unjust incarceration by following one's instincts,” Shiozaki added. “While acknowledging the worst, we also celebrate the healing and uplifting power of fishing.”

 

The film has been a fixture on the fishing scene ever since word started circulating that it was being made. “The support of the fishing community has been enthusiastic since we started,” Shiozaki added. “We've been at three of last four Fred Hall Shows, and we've been making presentations at a whole variety of fishing functions and events throughout. The support of Pat McDonnell and Western Outdoor News, as well as so much more of the fishing and outdoors media has been gracious and invaluable. We couldn't have done this without the fishing community.

 

“The DVD is our latest effort to bring this story to the community,” Shiozaki concluded, “and as a matter of fact, two fishing tackle stores—fixtures on the fishing scene—are also carrying the DVD for sale: Kenny's Rod and Reel in Upland and The Rusty Hook in San Pedro.”

            The inlet pipe at Irvine Lake’s Sierra Cove is running, which results in excellent fishing all around the vicinity, reported Daniela Gavaldon at the Pro Shop. “The pipe in Sierra Cove started running a couple of days ago”, observe Daniela Gavaldon at the Pro Shop. “As you would expect, the trout started to bite well right away in that vicinity. Whenever the pipe is running, the influx of oxygen, food, and current always draw the fish right in and make them very co-operative.”

            Gavaldon added, “The Christmas Trout Derby will take place this Saturday Dec. 15, and Sunday Dec. 16. Lots of prizes, a nice raffle, and a big cash payout with just a $10 buy-in. The event is also a Master’s Qualifier.”  

Very good numbers of both rainbow and brown trout this week were spiced up by a new lake record for one of the lake’s other species, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “Anglers in the USA sometimes forget that the WORLD’S most popular game fish is none other than the common carp.

We had a new lake-record carp weighed in this weekend, a 32-6 monster that hit a nightcrawler near the Red Clay Cliffs. Angler Larry Woodward of Chino fought the fish for 45 minutes on just 4-pound line. The IGFA World Record for carp on 4-pound line is 38 pounds, so it’s a pretty impressive accomplishment.” 

             Getty continued, “The trout fishing has been very good overall for beautiful 2 and 3-pound class rainbows, and we have been getting an unusually high number of really nice brown trout checked in too.”

            Besides Sierra Cove, good catches of trout were also checked in from Boat Dock Cove, the west shoreline, Trout Island, and Santiago Flats. Bait dunkers did best with 16-18 inch leaders, and Berkley Mice Tails in white/pink, glow, and orange/silver chartreuse colors. Trollers found success with Rapala Ultralight Shad ULS04’s in firetiger and clown colors.

Bass anglers continue to turn out in decent numbers, but are being a little secretive about results. Moderate numbers of 2 to 4-pound largemouth were confirmed for anglers using deep water techniques like jigs and dropshot-rigged plastics at 30 feet on hard structure like the Red Clay Cliffs and Rocky Point. Other reports of larger bucketmouths on swimbaits were unconfirmed. Anglers are reminded that all bass species are strictly catch and release at Irvine Lake.  

Families with children age 12 and under found good numbers of carp and 1 to 3-pound trout in the Kids Lagoon on PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and marshmallow-mealworm combos. Surface temperature on the main lake is 58-60 degrees. Underwater clarity is fairly good near the west shore with 2-3 feet of visibility, but the water is somewhat stained at Boat Dock Cove.

It's official. John Petruescu weighed his monster yellowfin tuna in yesterday at Fisherman's Landing in San Diego and at 445-pounds, it is the largest yellowfin tuna ever caught. The catch was made on December 3^rd on board the San Diego Long Range vessel Excel fish the remote Hurricane Bank. The bank is located nearly 1,000 miles southwest of San Diego and requires 4-days of travel each way.

It will not be an IGFA world record however, as a crew member helped Petruescu maneuver around the anchor and made contact with the rod. “The fact that John did not get a world record out of this does not diminish this one bit,” said Excel Captain Justin Fleck on Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio. “He did one hell of a job on that fish.”

 

A crowd of several hundred gathered in San Diego early Sunday morning to watch the giant yellowfin come to scale. Petruescu had battled the mighty fish for almost two hours; he was about to see exactly how much it weighed.

As the fish was lifted up, some shouted out “how much?” “445” someone shouted out as the crowd began to cheer. It was official; John Petruescu had landed the largest yellowfin tuna ever caught on a rod and reel.

Art Soriano drove all the way from Los Angeles with his three children to watch the weigh-in. “How often do you get to see history being made?” he asked rhetorically. “What an awesome day.”

Updated Guide to Central California Marine Protected Areas Now Available Online

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has released an updated Guide to the Central California Marine Protected Areas. This full-color guide now includes enhanced maps with identifiable landmarks, shoreline boundary images and existing regulations for marine protected areas (MPAs) along the central California coast (Pigeon Point in San Mateo County to Point Conception in Santa Barbara County). Additional information about central California MPAs, answers to frequently asked questions, general rules that apply to all MPAs and links to DFG web pages are also included in the updated guide.

 

“The public has asked us for assistance in identifying local MPA boundaries on-site and that is just what this enhanced guide provides,” said Paul Hamdorf, Acting DFG Marine Region Manager.

 

Central California MPAs went into effect on September 22, 2007 after the California Fish and Game Commission adopted regulations earlier that year. This regional network includes 28 MPAs and one State Marine Recreational Management Area, covering approximately 204 square miles of state waters, or 18 percent of the region.
