Yellowtail, bass, rockfish for Long Beach based sportfishers

Some of the best local and Island fishing for Long Beach based boats is taking place right now. The combination of calm seas, plenty of market squid for bait, and warm water, is producing some fine fall fishing as my good friend Captain Buzz Brizendine like to call it.

Out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach, the Dreamer with skipper Allyn Watson had brisk action at Catalina Island on Sunday. Six anglers captured 8 yellowtail and limits of calico bass (10 bass per angler). The Toronado was also at Catalina Island with only 12 anglers on board catching 90 calico bass, 1 yellowtail, 10 barracuda along with a mess of perch and rockfish.

"This is the best time of the year to go fishing," said Toronado skipper Ray Lagmay. "The weather is great, the fish are biting and there are very few people on the boat right now." The Toronado has trips this week. More information at 562 983 9300. 

On the local scene, fishing for rockfish has been spectacular. The Enterprise out of Marina Sportfishing in Long Beach had limits of rockfish on Sunday with lots of big, beautiful, fine eating rockfish on board. In addition, they also had 11 nice lingcod. "It is as good as it gets," reported skipper Andy Siratt. ""We are catching fish locally that anglers normally have to travel overnight to catch." 

Hector Garibaldo was on board the City of Long Beach out of Marina Sportfishing to take his father out for some 1/2 day fishing. His father had just flown in from Guadalajara, Mexico and Garibaldo wanted to take him fishing. The group of six were novice anglers but it wasn't long until the crew had them catching two fish at a time. "What a great experience," said Garibaldo. Twilight fishing on board the Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing was also excellent on Saturday as several big sand bass were landed. Captain Gabriel Ceballos anchored the Native Sun on one of the local wrecks where anglers caught numerous fat sand bass along with a good amount of sculpin.

A 2-ounce leadhead with live or fresh dead squid seemed to work best for both species. The weather was beautiful and water temperatures continued warm at 63 degrees. The Native Sun, Fishing with Phil has it's last twilight trip for 2012 this Saturday night. Reservations at 562 432 8993.
