Fish & Game access to sand bass meeting November 7 in Los Angeles

The Fish and Game Commission with be meeting next Wednesday, November 7, at 9:00 AM at the following location:

 Radisson Hotel at Los Angeles Airport
6225 West Century Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA

 

This Commission will be taking public comment on our access to kelp bass and sand bass. SAC has already gone on record supporting an increase in length to 13 inches which will cause an automatic reduction in bag limits.

SAC has also gone on record stating we should proceed carefully including more science data collection before drastic measures are taken. We encourage every landing and any member of the public to have representation at this meeting to speak to how the proposed "no retention" periods etc. recommended by DFG will impact you.

I like the approach that SAC is taking. If anglers are unwilling to give up something, others will decide our fate.

There has been another shark attack in California as two more great white sharks were caught and released by a fisherman off the Manhattan Beach Pier in the Santa Monica Bay.

Second shark attack in California in less than a week; Shark expert tells you how to stay safe

For the second time in less than a week, another surfer has been attacked by a shark along the California Coast. 

Humboldt County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Knight said his agency got a call at 12:11 p.m. reporting that a man had been bitten by a shark off the North Jetty near Eureka.

The surfer was able to get to the shoreline by himself but he was badly bleeding from the abdomen in what was described as life threatening injuries.

The attack comes less than a week after 39-year-old Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. of Orcutt was killed in a great white shark attack in the waters off Surf Beach in Santa Barbara County – hundreds of miles to the south from Eureka.

Solorio was bitten in the upper torso and died at the scene despite a friend's efforts to save him.

The beach, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, also was the site of an October 2010 fatal attack. Lucas Ransom, a 19-year-old student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, died when a shark nearly severed his leg as he body-boarded.

Fatal shark attack kills surfer near Vandenberg Air Force Base in California

On Tuesday a man was killed by a shark at Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base was surfing with friends. 

Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., 39, of Orcutt was killed in the attack off the coast of Surf Beach in Lompoc, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

He was bitten by the shark in his upper torso.

A group of four surfers was in the water when one saw his friend being attacked by a shark, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department officials said.

 Sgt. Mark Williams said that one surfer pulled the shark victim from the water while another dialed 911 around 11am Tuesday morning. 

Vandenberg fire rescue personnel arrived on scene and performed CPR before pronouncing the man dead on the beach, Williams said.

Vandenberg officials said the man was 38 years old but declined to provide further details until his next of kin is notified.

It remains unclear what kind of shark was responsible for the attack. Officials at Vandenberg advised people to stay away from the beach.

The attack comes almost two years to the day that 19-year-old Lucas Ransom was attacked and killed by a great white shark on the same beach on Oct. 22, 2010. 

There has been numerous great white shark sightings in this area in the past several months.

'THE MANZANAR FISHING CLUB' VIDEO RELEASE SET FOR OCTOBER 30, 2012

LOS ANGELES, October 25 – Called "a terrific documentary" (The Seattle Times), "absorbing" (Los Angeles Times) and "a window into something that still remains mysterious" (San Francisco Chronicle), THE MANZANAR FISHING CLUB video release is set for October 30. The DVD will be available immediately at the movie’s website, FearNoTrout.com, and soon via VOD. 

The film chronicles the Japanese American internment from a unique perspective: through the eyes of those who slipped past the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to fish for trout in the surrounding waters of the Sierra Nevada.

The injustice of the internment has been well documented in books, television and film.  Rather than focus on the confinement itself, THE MANZANAR FISHING CLUB spotlights real-life stories of freedom and the human spirit, dating back seven decades to when the first train loads of prisoners arrived at the remote military-style camp in eastern California.

Six years in the making, the film is the result of nearly 70 hours of interviews with surviving internees and their descendants, two MPs, two rangers from the Manzanar National Historical Site, the preeminent department of Fish and Game authority on the Eastern Sierra Fishery and Dr. Arthur Hansen, one of the leading authorities on the Japanese American internment.

"Coming off the most successful theatrical release ever for a documentary film about the internment, we're now able to bring the story to an even wider audience via digital delivery," said writer-producer Richard Imamura. "This has been a remarkable journey,” added director-producer Cory Shiozaki, "and it's a testament to the power of film to transform and delight."
