The Toronado out of Piepoint
Landing in Long Beach has already had a successful days fishing catching over150 dorado taken for 20 anglers
(US limits) and lots of releases. “It is really beautiful out here,” said Captain Ray Lagmay who
reported tropical-like conditions and flat calm seas. “The quality of our
dorado remains excellent with most of our catch 10-20 pounds and the big one
pushing 30-pounds.”
The Toronado is presently pushing further south now as on a 1.5 day trip, they get to fish until dark. “We are working hard to find some tuna for our passengers,” said Lagmay. Water temperatures remain over 70 degrees in much of the area that Lagmay fished today due to the El Nino Weather Phenomenon.
The Long Beach based sportfisher was only 70-miles from port
when they started catching their first dorado also called mahi-mahi. Many
anglers travel hundreds if not thousands of miles each year to catch these brightly
colored, acrobatic, fine eating fish. The El Nino and accompanying warm water has
given local fishermen a unique opportunity. “I have had so many great trips
this year for dorado and yellowtail,” said Scott Buchert from Corona del Mar. “I
didn’t have to fly to Cabo San Lucas either.”
Captain Shawn Morgon from Big Fish Tackle in Seal Beach was fishing the same area where the Toronado was today earlier in the week. “It’s as good as it gets,” said Morgon. “If you find a kelp (floating kelp paddy) no matter how small, it was holding yellowtail and dorado.”
Private boater Tim Starn who is a Costa Mesa Police Helicopter Pilot called in live to RADIO PFO earlier in the week and said he had easy 5-fish limits of dorado. “We left em biting.” Starn said that the dorado wanted a good lively bait; mackerel or sardine to get a bite. Lethargic baits just didn’t get consumed.
Next Toronado Trips. No license
necessary Saturday.
The Toronado has two more trips in the near future. On Friday, they will be on
a one-day trip for $160 and then Saturday a 1.5 day trip for $225. Call 562 983-9300
for reservations and don’t forget that Saturday
is a no license required fishing day. Perfect time to introduce a friend to
sportfishing.
