Upon walking on board Captain Dave Dodge's private boat in Huntington Harbor, there are some glaring omissions in the wheelhouse. No sonar, no depth-sounder, no GPS. Dodge has been doing repairs to the vessel and had taken all of the electronics that many find absolutely essential for finding fish off the boat for a time.
“Great to see you guys,” said Dodge as he cordially welcomed Will Ebersman from Los Angeles and myself on board Friday at 3pm. “Let’s go big bass hunting.” Dodge had informed us to bring nothing lighter than 30-pound test and as heavy as 50-pound line. “We’ll be fishing some very nasty structure and these fish know how to take you right back in there.”
Dodge has had his 500-ton Master of Tow License for over
25-years. Presently, Dodge is a Tug Captain and Operations Manager for Sause
Brothers in Long Beach Harbor. Dodge was also in the sportfishing business for
many years. I remember one twilight trip in particular with him about 15-years
ago when my oldest son Philip, then 7-years old caught a 8.5-pound sand bass on
the Southern Cal. A poster of that memorable catch still adorns Philip’s grandfather’s
wall at his workplace.
As we headed offshore, Dodge kept glancing back to the shoreline so he could lineup land bearings and locate his spot. Using land bearings to locate a sunken wreck or some other kind of structure that fish are likely to inhabit is a lost art.
Most young skippers simply input GPS numbers into a plotter and then drive to where the machine takes them. If the electronics failed, many would be lost. In the middle of a spirited political debate with Ebersman, Dodge pulled back on the throttles a few miles offshore and began to use binoculars to line up three land bearing. He dropped anchor and said “time to kick some bass.”
The structure that Dodge attempted to anchor near in the vast ocean was a mere 15-feet in length. “Cast around until we find the structure,” he said. On cast three, Ebersman had found it. “We’re in the right place,” said Dodge.
Big sardines were sent down to the bottom with 6-O hooks and 4-ounce torpedo sinkers. Ebersman hooked up first. “Turn the handle, turn the handle,” instructed Dodge. “Get that fish away from the structure.” Ebersman did just that and boated a nice fat 6-pound sand bass that was photographed and released. “That thing hit like a freight-train,” said Ebersman. “Now that was fun.”
From the very beginning, Dodge had told us that we would be big bass hunting. “I can take you to several places where we could catch smaller bass all night long,” he said. “Not tonight; we are after the big ones.”
We continued to catch and release sand bass to 8-pounds until 9-pm when we decided it was time to return home. There were a lot of causalities with the overgrown wily bass adept at gulping up a bait and heading back into the tiny wreck where one became hopelessly snared. “It’s all part of the game,” said Dodge. “In fact, it just makes it all the more interesting.”
