Captain Jon Ackley reported flat calm beautiful weather today at Catalina Island and very good action to boot. The Westerly had 18 anglers on a Dan Hernandez charter catching 1 white seabass, 1 yellowtail, 102 calico bass, 35 sheepshead, 35 blue perch, 1 barracuda, 1 sculpin and 6 whitefish.
"We had a big mako shark harassing us at the end of the trip and just plain ran out of bait," said Ackley. "I have a feeling that this place is about to go off."
Water temps at Catalina Island were as warm as 69 degrees today and that seems to be putting the fish in a biting mood. And let us not forget that seabass fishing could really start rocking any day now as the full moon is on July 4. White seabass have shown a penchant for biting around the full moon in the past and could produce some real fireworks.
Anglers headed to Catalina should try to bring an outfit with 25-pound test and another with 40-pound. There has been some yellowtail to 30-pounds so the heavy tackle is much advised.
Live squid has been the best bait with 2-O to 5-O hooks and a variety of slidding egg sinkers. Bring some 4-6 ounce torpedos if you want to catch a sheepshead or two too.
The Westerly has some openings for charters. Call Long Beach Sportfishing at 562 432 8993 to book.
