Blake Hon was enjoying some great summertime sandbass fishing on the 3/4 day Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing today when he hooked another sand bass on 15-lb test. Hon started to wind the tasty fish to the boat when a big mako shark swallowed his catch whole and took off into the deep abyss.
Hon had the perfect tackle for sand bass fishing. 15-pound test is perfect for getting a bite and a #2 hook was the perfect size for the anchovies on board.
Unfortunately, Hon's tackle gave him little chance at landing the fierce predator at the other end of his line.
But Hon did his best. He fought and struggled with the mammoth shark for 10 minutes when miraculously it came to the surface. Crew-members on the Enterprise were right there with gaffs and lifted the mighty shark over the rail.
"Blake (Hon) did a great job with this fish," said Enterprise skipper Andy Siratt. "It's a miracle that he was able to land it."
When the shark was opened up, it was full of sand bass. Several recently consumed sand bass were extracted from the sharks stomach along with more than 4 lures. One of the anglers on board was a marine biologist who was conducting studies on the sand bass biomass. "Hey, that's my plastic," he said as he retrieved a lure he lost just an hour before.

"One of the anglers on board was a marine biologist who was conducting studies on the sand bass biomass." - especially a marine biologist should know better than killing sharks for fun...
