LOS ANGELES – "The Manzanar Fishing Club," the critically acclaimed documentary feature about finding freedom in a surprising and unique manner, has crossed the Pacific and will open June 8 in Hawaii with exclusive engagements at the Kahala Theatre in Honolulu and the Kaahumanu Theatre in Kahului on Maui. The week long runs mark the film's debut away from the West Coast.
"We've always believed that the inspiring story of 'The Manzanar Fishing Club' has universal relevance," said writer/co-producer Richard Imamura. "The film has received a great reception on the West Coast, and now we're taking it away from where the story actually took place."
A rousing tale of the World War II roundup and incarceration of Japanese Americans on the West Coast as seen through the eyes of internees who shared a love of fishing, "The Manzanar Fishing Club" follows their adventures, set against the larger story of the Internment. Seventy years after the stealth fishermen at the Manzanar camp in eastern California first slipped past the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to fish for trout in the surrounding waters of the Sierra Nevada, their story is finally reaching the big screen.
But the documentary film is more than just a history book, as noted by Mark Sevi of the Orange County Screenwriters Association.
"The ending has a great reveal that would belie the documentary nature of the film," Sevi writes. "It's almost a treasure hunt worthy of a Ron Howard movie laid against the prejudices and hardships of the shameful nature of what America did to its citizens whose only crime was to be of Japanese heritage."
Taking the story to Hawaii is the next logical step in the film's expansion. Although the large Japanese American population avoided the mass roundup that befell the West Coast of the mainland, it wasn't completely untouched. Imamura's own grandfather, Makiso Kawaharada, who first arrived on Maui in 1906, was arrested by Military Police the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
"He was prominent in the Japanese schools on Maui and also served as liaison between the plantation and cannery workers on Maui and the Japanese consulate in Honolulu, so he was arrested as a community leader," Imamura related. "He was held in jail without charge for seven months."
In the meantime, Imamura's mother, Hazel, had arrived on the mainland less than a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor. "She intended to go to college on the mainland, but she was caught up in the roundup and was eventually sent to the Gila River camp on the Pima Indian Reservation in Arizona."
"The Manzanar Fishing Club" editor/co-producer Lester Chung's family also experienced that turbulent time in Hawaii from a different perspective—that of Chinese Americans.
"My great-grandfather crossed the Pacific in the late 1900s and landed in Maui," Chung noted. "He ran a general store in Wailuku. My maternal grandfather owned a long-time jewelry store in Honolulu Chinatown.
"My father, Edwin, was raised on Maui, then moved to Oahu. My mother, Dorothy Leong Chung grew up on Manoa Road." Chinese Americans were in a difficult position. Back in Asia, Imperial Japan was involved in a bloody invasion of China; but tensions eventually dissipated.
Chung attended the University of Hawaii, before graduating with a television/film degree from CSU, Long Beach. His company (formed in partnership with co-producer John Gengl) shouldered much of the production and post production duties of the film, and again reflects his Hawaiian roots with the name Talk Story Media—which is Hawaiian pidgen for sharing thoughts, ideas and stories.
