Video: Pelican survives scary dog encounter on Long Beach bait receiver

A brown pelican made the mistake of entering the territory of Diego the dog on the Long Beach Bait receiver on Saturday evening. Pelican's regularly visit bait receivers for a free lunch. They have learned that it is much easier to wade into a bait receiver full of sardines and anchovies for a meal instead of scouring the sea in search of.

Diego tries in vain to get at the pelican through a net stretched over the bait receiver. The bird finally gains its freedom by swimming through an open end of the floating receiver just out of reach of Diego's jaws.

Then as the bird swims back and forth in front of Diego seemingly taunting the dog, the bait receiver employee abruptly scoops up the un-expecting bird and tosses it to sea much to Diego's dismay.

Victory finds wide open barracuda off the Southern California coast

Despite poor local conditions such as cool water temperatures, the Victory from Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach found a giant bird school of barracuda on Sunday afternoon and caught 175 of the toothy hard fighting gamefish.

"It was wide open," said Victory skipper George Xenuios. "Instant hook-ups for everyone." Xenios was able to find a patch of 64 degree water and in it the biting barracuda.

Water temperatures have plummeted along the Southern California Coast leaving anglers with very slow local fishing. One thing we can glean from the Victory's catch is that things are likely to improve when water temperatures rebound.

The water temperature just outside the Federal Breakwall in Long Beach is a frigid 58 degrees this morning. Xenios has located another big school of barracuda this morning but the water temperature is only 61 degrees. "We have 18 (barracuda) on the boat and are seeing lots more," said Xenios. "It's all about the water temperature. If we can find barracuda in warmer water, we'll get em."

VIDEO: Fishermen fish to help send 5,000 pairs of shoes to Baja's poor

By the looks of it, Saturday nights Fishing with Phil trip on the Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach was just like any other fishing trip. About 50 anglers from Fishers Of Men West Coast were on deck talking about their past angling conquests as well as wondering what big fish may lie ahead.

In addition, over 20 kids were on board, most for their very first fishing trip. One of the central beliefs of the Phil Friedman Youth Outdoor Program has always been that "You can't protect what you don't understand." Kids who get out on the water and see all that it has to offer will surely grow up to protect it.

Graham McCulloch brought his 11-year old son Brayden all the way from Las Vegas for his very first fishing trip. After a slow start, Brayden caught fire and landed three nice sand bass with some expert coaching from is dad. "There is nothing better, nothing, than watching your grandson catch his first fish," said proud grandpa Jack.

There was a larger goal to this fishing trip and that was to raise money to send over 5,000 pairs of shoes to the poor of Baja's East Cape. "This is the first of three trips we are running to raise the funds we need to send 5,000 pairs of shoes to Baja's East Cape.

Thanks to Wallace Air Cargo Group, not only did another group of children get to experience fishing, but also funds were raised to take care of Baja's poorest. "This is a great night," said Jack McCulloch's Wide Shoes in Brea, Ca. "We have taken a giant step towards sending shoes down south again.

The shoes will be distributed later this fall from Hotel Palmas de Cortes in Baja's East Cape. We will keep you all informed and hope to have Phil Friedman Productions on hand to videotape what promises to be an extraordinary day.

2 dead after boat capsized on Lake Irvine

The bodies of Juan Flores, 34, and Tomas Privera, 23, were retrieved by a diving team Sunday morning from the bottom of the lake Irvine in Silverado, east of Orange, authorities said. The men were in a small fiberglass boat that capsized overnight on Sunday.

Search-and-rescue helicopters and several boats spent aproximately three hours looking for Flores and Privera, but called off that effort about 3:30 a.m., said Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion.

Two other men were rescued by the lakes security guard, Jerry Wall just after midnight on Sunday. They were interviewed by authorities and released. For now, the incident is being treated as an accident.

A full autopsy was being scheduled for this week.

Rare spanish jack taken off Southern California Coast on the Enterprise

Austin Moss from Long Beach, Ca just caught a 7-pound spanish jack on board the 3/4 day Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing.

"I've maybe seen 3 (spanish jacks) in the past 10 years," said Enterprise skipper Andy Siratt.

Moss was fishing for sand bass and barracuda with an anchovy when the uncommon visitor swallowed his bait.

Spanish jacks are more often taken on offshore tuna trips and don't usually visit our coastal areas; but it wasn't always that way.

Don Ashley remembers a day circa 1990 when he was running the El Dorado and fishing the Huntington Flats. The 3/4 day boat Victory had called Ashley on the radio and told him to anchor nearby. "We caught hundreds of spanish jacks," said Ashley. "They stuck around for about a week and then vanished."

Siratt said that there were some big schools around and that tehy caught around 30 fish. "We got bit everytime we stopped and had big sonar marks too," said Siratt. "They wanted to bite best on the small shiny trout-like lures."

Kelp paddy yellowtail for San Diego based boats

Patrick Basler just returned from an offshore trip on board the Outer Limits out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego where 20 anglers caught 88 yellowtail. The weather was windy and nasty for most of the trip and made finding floating kelp paddies more difficult.

The floating kelps, sometimes referred to as hotels attract baitfish as well as the predators who feed on them. Finding them is an essential part of these kinds of trips.

The Outer Limits traveled as far south as 128 miles to make their catch although there has been some more fish taken 85-90 miles from Point Loma, San Diego.

More curent fishing facts:

Most of the yellowtail are 7-15 pounds
25-pound test and a 2-O hook with a 1/2 ounce slidding sinker good
Bluefin tuna scattered and slow
Some yo-yo iron yellowtail on blue/white and dorado colored jigs.
Weather still an issue this afternoon

VIDEO: Bait beats babe

Jessica Garvisch had one goal in mind on a recent Fishing with Phil trip; to catch an anchovy in the bait tank. As you will see, that sounds a lot easier than it is.

Watch Jessica as she battles the mighty anchovy in this latest light-moment from Phil Friedman Outdoors Productions. It should be noted that Jessica caught as many sand bass as anyone smoking Philip Friedman Jr. 5-0.

As far as catching that anchovy, you'll just have to watch and see what happens.

VIDEO: Fishing with Phil hot bass action

Great times Fishing with Phil last night on the Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing as Captain Kevin Nguyen put us on a mess of biting sand bass just before sunset. Light line didn't seem to matter at first but as the evening went on, 12-15 pound test did make a difference.

Jessica was also on board and while she caught 5 quick sand bass, her quest was to catch a bait for the very first time. You can follow her exploits and see if she was able to attain her goal.
