The USS Iowa now has its new home in Southern California. The iconic World War II-era battleship arrived in San Pedro on Wednesday morning. Several boats gathered to see the arrival of the famed ship and added to a festive atmosphere.
"What a sight," said Danny Salas from Harbor Breeze Cruises in Long Beach. "We are lucky to have her here."
The retired ship will now be a floating interactive museum at the port of Los Angeles.
The Iowa was first commissioned in 1943 and saw duty in World War II and the Korean War. It also took part in escorting tankers in the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War.
The decommissioned ship left San Francisco on Saturday after being refurbished there. The ship is 887 feet long, the size of three football fields, and saw battle during World War II and the Korean War. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt also traveled on the vessel.
The museum is scheduled to open in July.

My name is Dale McKinnon and I served on the Iowa during the Korean war. I belong to the USS Iowa Veteran's Association. We are being treated like royalty, our association will be allowed on the ship July 4 ahead of sightseers. I'm from Oregon and I am very jealous of L.A. for getting the Iowa. I hope the Iowa is everything Californians hope for. Incidentally, San Pedro is like home to the Iowa. As a boy of 19 I just got out of boot camp and was sent to Long Beach where the ship was anchored. What a sight for a dumb kid. If memory serves me right we docked at a pier in San Pedro immeditely before embarking to Korea. God Bless the USS Iowa and the USA
