Several private boaters have checked in with limits of barracuda this morning as the big bird schools that moved into the Santa Monica Bay are starting to bite.
The sportboat Spitfire was moving up on 75 barracuda by 9:30am as the elongated, hard fighting gamefish were very active.
Mark Zahza from the Redondo Special called in at 9:50am to report "WIDE OPEN" fishing. "It's all you want and they are big."
One thing that is noticeable about the bite is the size of the 2012 barracuda. "We have seen fish as big as 10-pounds and several barracuda in the 8-pound class," said Jimmy Bass from Tradition Sportfishing. "There are some logs here."
Bass pointed out that it is far better to call for a gaff if you have one of these stove pipes than to try to bounce it. "We have already seen one rod snap in half," he said.
The barracuda were biting on both bait and lures. Fishing bait is trick as these toothy critters are adept at biting through monofilament line. Throwing the iron (lures) is the best way to take barracuda. Twenty-five to thirty-pound test with a light surface iron or a small heavy jig refereed to a a yo-yo iron works equally as well.
Barracuda prefer a slow to medium retrieve and as usual, you set the hook by turning the handle of your reel until the fish pulls line against the drag.
"This is really exciting fishing," said Bass. "It's what we call run and gun. You see a bird school in the distance, the boat throttles down and heads over and you hope for a boat with bent rods."
