Sand bass fishing started off good on Friday
night for the lucky anglers on board the Native Sun on a Fishing with Phil trip. By 9pm, over 40 nice sand bass had come on board as Captain Gabriel Ceballos had expertly anchored on a slug of hungry fish.
The sandies were being primarily taken on 2-ounce banana leadheads and squid. Some anglers were using green leadheads while Spiro Babos favored the pink leadhead. Both were producing good results under a beautiful bright full moon.
"Nice start to the night," said Ceballos. "We have three fish hooked right now and a few sculpin starting to come on too." Both species make for some good eating so anglers not only are having fun catching surface fish but they can also dine on some fresh fish for Easter weekend.
Anglers differ on what pound test to use. Some claim that 12-pound test gets bit with much greater frequency while others want the pulling power that 25-30 pound test lends. "I've seen it work both ways," said Ceballos. "I like a little heavier just in case you hook a big bass or a giant halibut."
The Native Sun will be at it again on Saturday night departing Long Beach Sportfishing at 6:30 p.m. and returning around 12 midnight. "It's the perfect getaway for Easter," said Will Ebersman from Philip Friedman Outdoors. "You get a fun time and chance to catch some fish and your home for Easter Sunday."
One thing anglers should keep in mind is that Ceballos is anchoring over bad neighborhoods. That is to say there are rocks, ship wrecks and other hazards that hooked fish with use to their benefit.
Sometimes a fish will come out of it's hole, swallow your bait and then head back into it's hidding place. "It's important after you set the hook to turn the handle and get some line on the reel," said Ceballos. "It can be the difference between catching a big one and being frustrated."
By the end of the night, 26 anglers on board had taken 106 sand bass and 17 sculpin for another great Fishing with Phil Twilight adventure.
The bass seemed to be active and biting on the full moon which bodes well for Saturday night.
