It has been an unseasonably cold winter in Western Japan.
When it is snowing at the port/dock, we think more of catching salmon than warm water species, but Japan is blessed with the “Kuroshio”, which is a warm water current not unlike the Gulf Stream, that brings warm water to the East Coast of the USA.
The giant albacore came, and went, and the season was a stellar one…I know of two albacore larger than the current IGFA WR (88 pounds, 2 ounces, caught off South Africa) caught on rod and reel.
The reports were not favorable, but we decided to do an exploratory trip out 32 miles to an edge of warm, clean water.

We arrived at the area just after sunrise, and but the trolling jigs out.
To say it was cold would be an understatement. Last summer, I had several good trips catching dorado (mahi mahi) on handmade trolling lures made by Gaji Lures, of Hawaii. I was hoping some of the mahi-luck would help us to nail a stray pelagic.
The jigs had not been out more than three minutes, when the shotgun (short, starboard side line) went off! Much to my surprise, it was a dorado!
While not a huge fish, it was welcomed by us….we would have fresh mahi for dinner!
The rest of the day was uneventful…we picked up one more mahi mahi…also on a Gaji “fusion” trolling lure.
We were happy to just be out on the ocean, with friends, a few fish, and both a beautiful sunrise, and sunset.
