On Wednesday, a teenage boy dug a hole in the Newport Beach sand just like so many others. This time however, the walls caved in on the young man and he wad buried alive.
Rick Shepherd of Newport Beach was there when the horrific event transpired. "We thought we were actually going to pull up a dead body to be honest with you. All the girls were crying. I mean, it was a tear jerker, and then when they pulled him up...everybody clapped," said Shepherd to ABC News. "God was with him."
In what was to become a group effort, firefighters, lifeguards, and beachgoers started digging with anything they could find. Unfortunately, the more they dug, the more sand kept pouring in.
They cut a hole in a bucket and put a bucket over his head because the sand kept filling in and it was getting into his mouth and then they got oxygen to him," said Rick Shepherd of Newport Beach.
On another beautiful Southern California beach day, let this serve as a warning about how dangerous digging in the sand can be.
