A 57-year old man from Torrance, California man has been identified as the hiker killed by a Grizzly bear on Wednesday morning at Yellowstone National Park. Brian Matayoshi was hiking with his wife on Wapiti Trail when the attack occurred.
According to the parks press release, the couple was hiking back toward their vehicle about 11:00 a.m. at a point a mile and a half from the trailhead when they walked into an open meadow where they saw the female grizzly.
They turned and started walking away from the bear but the bear pursued them.
They started to run but the bear caught up to them mauling Brian Matayoshi. The bear then went over to Mrs. Matayoshi, who had fallen to the ground nearby. The bear bit her daypack, lifting her from the ground and then dropping her. She remained still and the bear left the area.
Mrs. Matayoshi dialed 911 but couldn't get a signal. She shouted and screamed for help until a group of hikers dialed 911 and summoned park rangers.
Brian Matayoshi suffered multiple wounds and was dead when rangers arrived, at about 11:30 a.m. The female bear was presumed to have been acting in defense of her cubs, according to a preliminary investigation, and does not appear to have a prior history of aggression toward humans.
Though the case will be reviewed, typically the park does not trap, relocate or kill a bear under these circumstances. Bear attacks are extremely rare. No one was hurt by a bear in Yellowstone in 2010. This is the first time a human has been killed by a bear in the park since 1986.
The Wapiti Lake Trail and nearby trails are expected to be closed for several days. Visitors to the park, are advised to hike in large numbers when possible, make noise in areas where bears might be surprised, and to carry bear pepper spray. The Matayoshis were not carrying pepper spray.
