Frank Rivera from Camarillo knew he had something big but he had no idea that he was reeling in the largest California halibut ever taken. The flattie, taken on the Mirage out of Channel Island Sportfishing at Santa Rosa Island is nearly nine pounds heavier than the current all-tackle record. Rivera used 25-lb test to wrestle the fish to the surface in about 10 minutes.
Rivera has been working on the boats for years with Seaboard Marine. The trip on the Mirage was their annual fishing trip. The fact that the Mirage withskipper Joey Villareal at the helm had taken 38 white seabass, and 2 other halibut for their passengers was trumpeted by Rivera's barn-door.
No one knew for sure how big the enormous flatfish weighed. Villareal made note of the fact that the fish was thick; very thick and he knew it was a special catch. Confirmation came when the monster was weighed on the landings certified scale. 67.1-pounds; a pending new world record.
A notary was summoned to record the weight, a California fish and game officer verified it was indeed a California halibut and the IGFA paperwork was submitted. Rivera plans to have the giant halibut mounted to be displayed at Seaboard Marine.
One thing is for sure, this will be a hard act to follow on next years charter.
Captain Joey Rivera left, with angler Frank Rivera with possibly the largest California halibut ever taken.
