Deborah Felix and her dad Agustin put together a great first time surf fishing adventure for 4 great kids. David, Destany and Xavier Morales were joined by Ethan Aquilar for a mornings fishing in front of the Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio Show Studios in Surfside, California.
The kids arrived just after 6am and were super excited. First we dispatched our young team to scour the sandy beaches for bait; sand crabs in this case. Using a sand crab catcher which screens out the sand and leaves behind sand crabs, the kids started scoring bait. What seems like work for some of us who have been doing this for a few years was a delightful fun game for the kids and reminded me why the Outdoors are so special especially for children.
We rigged up the lines, cast our baits out to sea and waited for that magical first tug at the fishing line. Dolphins were playing, surfing and feeding just offshore, white terns were picking baitfish of the surface of the ocean as the kids picked up sea shells and explored.
Then; a hook-up. Eleven year old Destany was on. Her eyes were bulging out of her head with a big smile as she turned the handle of the reel. “It feels really big,” she said. After a few minutes, a small smoothhound shark emerged from the surf. “Can I hold it? Can I touch it?” asked Destany. The kids gathered around the creature and each took a turn touching the creature and asking questions about it.
Then, just like the script was written, each child caught a shark. Ten year old Ethan, just couldn’t learn enough. “What do they eat? How big do they get? What other kinds of fish are here?” asked the young man.
With each and every shark taken, there was a palpable excitement that filled the beach and embodied what the “Great Outdoors” is really all about. Appreciating how blessed we are to have so much beauty all around us and getting out to experience it. That could only lead to a generation who wants to grow up to protect our precious resources.
“The kids haven’t stopped talking about it,” said Felix. “They are never going to forget this day.” That may be true but the reality is, nether will I.
