The Independence reported taking the first tuna for San Diego based boats of 2013 on Wednesday. It was a bluefin tuna in the 25-pound class taken trolling 180 miles from San Diego. Reports of more breaking fish in the area have some anglers excited and anticipating the approaching tuna season.
Water temperatures in the area where the tuna was taken was near 64-degrees which is perfect for albacore tuna too. “There seems to be a lot of bait and the oceanography seems to be right this year,” said Don Ashley from Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach.
Other boats will be looking this area over and Phil Friedman Outdoors will be keeping you informed. The Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio Show, Saltwater Edition will have lots more on this story as well as all of the saltwater news on Thursday at 2-pm.
