The long-range vessel Independence out of San Diego caught the first blue fin tuna of 2013 earlier this week fishing 175 miles from San Diego. Captain Paul Strausser said that the conditions looked favorable for a good run of albacore tuna too.
"We put trolling lures out at daybreak and had a hook-up not too long after," Strausser said. On the Phil Friedman Outdoors Radio Show, Strausser described conditions that he called perfect for albacore. "The water temperatures were right at 64 degrees and there was plenty of bait around too. Strausser said he worked in toward Ensenada off the Baja coast and found the same kind of favorable conditions all the way in to Todos Santos Island.
