Hear Tony Lozano on the BAJA NOW RADIO SHOW at the 78 minute mark
Tony Lozano from La Guerita Restaurant in Rosarito Beach has added a touch of gourmet to street tacos and burritos with La Guerita Express. Located next to his restaurant La Guerita and directly across the street from the old Calimax grocery store, La Guerita Express offers seafood tacos with freshly caught and harvested fish and mariscos daily.
Lozano’s idea is to provide a quick quality meal at a reasonable price with some unique and delicious tacos. He has succeeded. Walking by La Guerita Express and not stopping is difficult enough. You can smell all the delicious aromas from a variety of tacos in the air as you pass by. On Saturdays, you can smell fresh tuna being smoked for blocks in a humongous smoker located just behind the Guerita Express. Ten different styles of seafood tacos are prepared daily.
How about smoked tuna machaca? The crab tacos are to die for made from the local spider crab that local fisherman call marcianos or martians in English. Breaded shrimp or fish; sea snails in a delicious garlic sauce which taste a lot like abalone. Octopus and whatever else that is fresh and in season. They are the only restaurant in town with live oysters and they also have killer ceviche.
Lozano is also an accomplished fisherman and spends a great deal of time looking for and providing only the very best seafood for his restaurant clients. He has two boats located at Puerto Salinas and is out on the water every single week. “It’s the most important ingredient to good seafood,” said Lozano. “It must be fresh.” Most of Lozano’s employees have been with him for at least 15 years and the service is impeccable.
Lozano’s madre was one of the original founders of the Puerto Nuevo Lobster Village. In the 1960’s, while the fisherman were harvesting lobster from the sea, the wives would stay home and sell lobster to the public. Lozano said that there were many occasions when his father would fish late so his mom would prepare lobster dinners for the people for free as they awaited their bounty from the rugged Baja coast.
In 1979, Lozano’s family moved to Rosarito where they still provide Puerto Nuevo style lobster every single day. By the way, if you have someone in the family who wants a good steak or chicken, La Guerita has that too.
The tacos at La Guerita Express will set you back around $1.25 each and are truly some of the best around. Hours are 8am until 5pm or until they run out of fresh ingredients.
